Flower Wreath - Multi Functional

Today we created a miniature flower wreath for a funeral reception. The wreath was accompanied by 8 petite bubble bowl centerpieces.

The flower wreath can serve multiple functions. It can be used for a sympathy piece on a standing easel, a wall hanging or a table centerpiece. We laid the wreath flat on the table with a candle latern placed in the center.

The lantern centerpiece can be used on a banquet table for Thanksgiving dinner and then hung up on a wall or door for a few days for extended use.

Today we set up flowers for an event at the San Diego Sea World Nautilus Pavillion for the Department of Veterans Affairs. This was for the opening ceremony, we will also be doing the closing ceremony coming up this Friday, September 24th. Battle of the Flower Designers- March Madness 2010

There is a fun contest going on between several florist across the nation. It is set up bracket style similar to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Each florist creates a unique arrangement using a specific list of flowers. They each create a short video clip and voting is open to the public. There are also two AIFD judges involved as well. The voting is weighted 33% public vote and 33% each for the two judges.

Blue and Purple Roses

By popular demand, we have added dyed blue and purple roses to our flower menu. Many floral designers frown on the use of dyed flowers which makes availability of them very limited. La Jolla Village Florist is in the business to give the public what they want, if it's dyed roses they want, it's dyed roses they get.

These roses are so popular, we cannot seem to keep them in stock. We get several orders per week from our website and from walk in customers in our shop. It's been quite phenomenal.

The growers have discovered that the white rose "Vendela" works best with the dying technique. Coloring is mixed in water and the roses are added. While hydrating, the white rose
head pulls the dye up the stem and in time, it will change color.

The reason we believe they are so popular is because they are very unique and the colors are so vibrant and eye catching. These roses are hard to find, so delivery availability is limited to our local radius. Unfortunately many florists do not carry this popular rose, so it is difficult to find a shop to handle any out of town requests for them.

When Heather, our head design artist created what became to be known as the "Turquoise Aqua" arrangement, we knew it was something special, but none of us could predict how popular this arrangement would become. Originally created for a Coldwell Banker event at the La Jolla Marriott, the buzz surrounding this gem prompted us to immediately put it on our website. This event was held on January 21st 2009 at the McMillian Event Center at NTC Promenade. Our design artists created a winter zen piece to be centered on 26 banquet black linened banquet tables. These displays consisted of beautiful white Fuji Mums, Misty White Filler, Green Kermit Poms, Horsetail, & Beargrass.

Flowers For Corporate Parties

These tough economic times have forced many businesses to drastically reduce their budgets for holiday parties. We at La Jolla Village Florist understand this and have come up with some creative solutions to work within these limited budgets. Floral centerpieces are a very important necessity to give tables that finished look. A room full of beautiful flowers and fragrance can make a lasting impression which will make an event a most memorable one. This year we worked with event coordinators struggling with limited budgets by coming up with a cost effective solution without sacrificing the beauty of the flower arrangement.

For the very first event ever held at the brand new Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel and Resort, the event coordinator wanted us to create something completely different from the traditional Christmas type centerpiece. She wanted the flower centerpieces to complement the blue and brown colors of the hotel, the stylish elegant look of the Indigo Ballroom and the beautiful view of the San Diego Bay. This was a large event for over 1000 people and 114 tables.

Our design artist team took this challenge head on and came up with the idea to use blue and white hydrangeas, white Blizzard roses, green button poms, blue thistle, seeded eucalyptus, bear grass in a white pedestal container.

A little history on this San Diego Flower Shop...

La Jolla Village Florist was established over 30 years ago way back in 1977. It is one of the few original shops left in the every changing Westfield Shoppingtown University Towne Centre shopping mall. My Aunt worked for the original owners from the very beginning, then with some nudging by her, my Grandparents bought the store 3 years later in 1980. Since the beginning, our shop has been one of the favorite local florists which lies on the border of San Diego and La Jolla.

UTC (University Towne Centre) has gone through some changes over the years. Originally designed in the spirit of a German Renaissance town, the mall has changed into a modern open air shopping mall. Our store has also reflected these changes, the first exterior design, which was originally located on the Sears wing, looked like an old western boutique. The interior walls were made up of an actual barn that was torn down specifically to be used for our shop. In the early 90's our shop went through an exterior face lift in which we created a more open feel with large glass windows and large open doors. In 2000 we moved to a different location within the mall near the food court / ice rink. Green tones and natural wood colors, we've created a more earthy, Zen feel.

I've worked at the family florist since I was a youngster. I started out cleaning buckets, cleaning flowers, mopping floors etc... and worked my way up to a managment position. While majoring in business at San Diego State University, I was learning a lot of business fundamentals that I felt I could apply to the flower shop. My graduating from SDSU coincided with the retiring of my grandparents. I gladly took over the whole operation and am still learning and growing with the business. Running a succesful florist doesn't come without it's challenges, which I hope to touch on down the road right here on this blog.
