Our World Famous Turquoise Aqua Arrangement Strikes Again!

When Heather, our head design artist created what became to be known as the "Turquoise Aqua" arrangement, we knew it was something special, but none of us could predict how popular this arrangement would become. Originally created for a Coldwell Banker event at the La Jolla Marriott, the buzz surrounding this gem prompted us to immediately put it on our website. This arrangement has become one of our best sellers and has been picked by several event coordinators to to be used, or at least a variation of, for their events.



The latest was for a Bank of America & US Trust event at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on January 29th, 2009.

Japan Society of San Diego Leadership Awards Gala

We're happy to announce the success of yet another winter event, this time the Awards Gala for the Japan Society of San Diego:

"The JSSDT will celebrate the new year (Shinnenkai) and honor exceptional leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of goodwill and the advancement of business, civic, educational, and cultural interchange and understanding between the people of Japan, San Diego, and Tijuana."

This event was held on January 21st 2009 at the McMillian Event Center at NTC Promenade. Our design artists created a winter zen piece to be centered on 26 banquet black linened banquet tables. These displays consisted of beautiful white Fuji Mums, Misty White Filler, Green Kermit Poms, Horsetail, & Beargrass.

Flowers May Help After Surgery

Every day we deliver beautiful fresh flowers to local San Diego and La Jolla hospitals like Scripps Memorial Hospital, Scripps Green, UCSD Medical Center - Thorton Hospital, and Sharp Memorial. These flowers will often cheer up a patient who may not be feeling too well at the time. But a recent study has shown that they may do more than just brighten the moment, this contact with nature may help speed recovery. Here's an excerpt from the article Flowers May Help After Surgery:

"Patients with plants in their rooms used significantly less pain medication
and had lower blood pressure and heart rates. Overall, they were more
satisfied with their entire stay. Ninety-three percent of those who had flowers said it was the best part of the room, and 91 percent of those without flowers said it was the television."

Flowers For Corporate Parties

These tough economic times have forced many businesses to drastically reduce their budgets for holiday parties. We at La Jolla Village Florist understand this and have come up with some creative solutions to work within these limited budgets. Floral centerpieces are a very important necessity to give tables that finished look. A room full of beautiful flowers and fragrance can make a lasting impression which will make an event a most memorable one. This year we worked with event coordinators struggling with limited budgets by coming up with a cost effective solution without sacrificing the beauty of the flower arrangement.

For the very first event ever held at the brand new Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel and Resort, the event coordinator wanted us to create something completely different from the traditional Christmas type centerpiece. She wanted the flower centerpieces to complement the blue and brown colors of the hotel, the stylish elegant look of the Indigo Ballroom and the beautiful view of the San Diego Bay. This was a large event for over 1000 people and 114 tables.

Our design artist team took this challenge head on and came up with the idea to use blue and white hydrangeas, white Blizzard roses, green button poms, blue thistle, seeded eucalyptus, bear grass in a white pedestal container.

A little history on this San Diego Flower Shop...

La Jolla Village Florist was established over 30 years ago way back in 1977. It is one of the few original shops left in the every changing Westfield Shoppingtown University Towne Centre shopping mall. My Aunt worked for the original owners from the very beginning, then with some nudging by her, my Grandparents bought the store 3 years later in 1980. Since the beginning, our shop has been one of the favorite local florists which lies on the border of San Diego and La Jolla.

UTC (University Towne Centre) has gone through some changes over the years. Originally designed in the spirit of a German Renaissance town, the mall has changed into a modern open air shopping mall. Our store has also reflected these changes, the first exterior design, which was originally located on the Sears wing, looked like an old western boutique. The interior walls were made up of an actual barn that was torn down specifically to be used for our shop. In the early 90's our shop went through an exterior face lift in which we created a more open feel with large glass windows and large open doors. In 2000 we moved to a different location within the mall near the food court / ice rink. Green tones and natural wood colors, we've created a more earthy, Zen feel.

I've worked at the family florist since I was a youngster. I started out cleaning buckets, cleaning flowers, mopping floors etc... and worked my way up to a managment position. While majoring in business at San Diego State University, I was learning a lot of business fundamentals that I felt I could apply to the flower shop. My graduating from SDSU coincided with the retiring of my grandparents. I gladly took over the whole operation and am still learning and growing with the business. Running a succesful florist doesn't come without it's challenges, which I hope to touch on down the road right here on this blog.
